The APK on its own will not run a game. ArmSX1 needs a PlayStation BIOS file, which you select inside the app. Read about the PS1 BIOS here.

What you need before installing

  • An Android device. Android is the only platform with a published build. The source also targets desktop, iOS, UWP, WebAssembly and PSVita, but no release has shipped for them yet.
  • A PS1 BIOS. ArmSX1 boots through a real PlayStation BIOS and does not include one. Dump it from a console you own.
  • Your own games. ArmSX1 ships none. It opens .bin/.cue, single-track .bin, .iso, .chd and .zip images, and groups multi-disc games with an .m3u playlist.

How to install the APK

  1. Download the APK above.

It lands in your Download folder. The file comes from GitHub, not from Google Play, so Play Protect is not in the loop.

  2. Open it and allow the install.

Android asks once for permission to install apps from whichever app you opened the file with — your browser or your file manager. Grant it, then tap Install.

  3. Select your BIOS.

Open ArmSX1 and choose the PlayStation BIOS file from your storage.

  4. Add your games.

Point the app at the folder holding your disc images. Box art downloads automatically, and under Video the developer recommends HD 3.

Previous versions

Kept because a newer build occasionally regresses on a particular device. If the latest one misbehaves for you, drop back one version.

Nightly builds

Built automatically from the latest code and marked as pre-releases on GitHub. Useful for checking whether a bug is already fixed; not what to install if you just want to play something.

What ArmSX1 actually is

ArmSX1 is a PlayStation 1 emulator from the founders of ARMSX2. It began as a fork of psxe; since version 0.1.6 the Android app runs on the SwanStation core inside ARMSX1's own frontend, with Vulkan, OpenGL ES and software renderers, HD resolution, runahead, a cheat database, RetroAchievements, custom Adreno drivers and remappable controls. New builds arrive every few days, each with a list of fixes in its release notes.

This site is a community mirror of the project's public releases. It is not run by the ArmSX1 developers, and it does not host or distribute games or BIOS files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Every APK linked on this page is the file the project published on GitHub, and nothing here is sold. Note that free to download is not the same as open source: the ARMSX-specific parts of the code are proprietary.

Two things: a PlayStation BIOS file and your own games. ArmSX1 ships neither. You select the BIOS inside the app, then point it at a folder of BIN/CUE, ISO, CHD or ZIP images dumped from discs you own.

Not as a release. The source code builds for desktop, Android, iOS, UWP, WebAssembly and PSVita, but only Android APKs are published on the GitHub releases page so far.

Because the file comes from GitHub rather than Google Play, and Android asks once for permission to install apps from whichever app you opened it with. Grant it to the browser or file manager you used, then install as normal.

The newest stable release, at the top of this page. Older releases are kept because a new build occasionally regresses on a particular device, so if the latest one misbehaves you can drop back a version.

Builds produced automatically from the latest code, marked as pre-releases on GitHub. They are untested and meant for checking whether a bug is already fixed, not for everyday play.
